When designing this project for a back land development we were restricted to incredibly low roof heights and the need for a basement squeezed between protected tree (TPO) root protection zones. The proposal flips and sinks the house. Though you are still entering the family living spaces at ground level, you go down a couple of steps where in a house you might go up. Transitioning to the bedroom floor is then through a staircase, going down instead of up. Carefully designed light wells wrap two sides of the house bringing in a southern exposure and light deep into the plan at both levels. Sadly not built due to the client’s decisions not to proceed.
